Jesus turned water into GLORY!
Alcohol Statistics
Alcohol is responsible for appox. 66% of all fatal accidents; 70% of all murders; 50% of all rapes; 60% of child abuse and child molestation cases; and commits more people to the mental hospital than any other cause!
Taxpayers spend $11.00 to offset each $1.00 paid in liquor revenue
Alcohol kills 6 times more youth than all other illicit drugs combined.
Wine, including fermented, was used in earlier times to purify water that was stored in cisterns and wells.THAT WAS THE MAJOR USE OF IT! It was mixed with water at a very low ratio, consisting of the lowest ration of (3 parts water to 1 part wine-which was the lowest acceptable ratio; this produced a drink that was 2.5-2.75% alcoholic) up to (20+ parts water to 1 part wine). Thus, it was a sub-alcoholic beverage, which is why pastors and deacons are "not given to wine,"
I Tim. 3:3; 8; Titus 1:7. In Prov.23:29-31 it speaks of those who "tarry long at the wine." This purification is not necessary in modern times--we have chlorine, sodium chlorohydrates.
Wine today is different than Biblical wine. "Strong drink...unmixed wine...wine mixed with herbs" in Biblical times was only at the most 3% - 10% alcohol. Those who drank this form of alcohol were considered barbaric!
If these people had been drinking fermented alcohol wine, strong drink or wine mixed with herbs for 3 days they would be in no condition to know the difference of good wine and old wine. In fact old wine turns to a vinger taste.
This verse....John 2:11 This, the first of his miraculous signs, Jesus performed in Cana of Galilee. He thus revealed his glory, and his disciples put their faith in him.
Thus Jesus revealed HIS GLORY to HIS disciples and they put their FAITH in Jesus for the first time!
This is the begaining of Jesus's actions of the GLORY of the Father in heaven and this is the frist time Jesus gave us the GLORY all the way to the cross. This is not about wine as we know it today.
Smarter men than I have debated this issue for centuries. After researching drinking for my own personal reasons. Everyone of us knows a person with a drinking problem. If a family member is a drunk the whole family is a drunk, vote NO to alcohol sales. If it saves one person it is worth everything, a life. Alcohol is allready available to those that choose that lifestyle.
My rule of thumb when studing the Bible is this. When wine is mention, if it is in a rightous text this is a good thing and/or if it is mention in an unrightous text bad! I will be pleased to debate this further with anyone. This is just a short synopsis of the whole story.
Rightous text would be like...
1 Timothy 3
1. It is a trustworthy statement: if any man aspires to the office of overseer, it is a fine work he desires to do. 2. An overseer, then, must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, temperate, prudent, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, 3. not addicted to wine or pugnacious, but gentle, peaceable, free from the love of money
Un-rightous would be...
Proverbs 23: 29
Who has woe? Who has sorrow? Who has contentions? Who has complaining? Who has wounds without cause? Who has redness of eyes? 30.Those who linger long over wine, Those who go to taste mixed wine. 31.Do not look on the wine when it is red, When it sparkles in the cup, When it goes down smoothly;
32.At the last it bites like a serpent And stings like a viper. 33.Your eyes will see strange things And your mind will utter perverse things. 34.And you will be like one who lies down in the middle of the sea, Or like one who lies down on the top of a mast. 35."They struck me, but I did not become ill; They beat me, but I did not know it When shall I awake? I will seek another drink."
