Simple Tests Help Protect Your Health Last week, we discussed the importance of people 50 and over having regular screenings for colorectal cancer. This week, I'll note some of the other medical tests doctors advise for the 50-plus set: FOR WOMEN: A triple-play: 1) Thyroid hormone test to help detect metabolism problems; 2) Annual pelvic exams and pap tests, especially for the sexually active, to detect cancer and sexually transmitted diseases; 3) Annual mammograms and breast exams by your doctor. FOR MEN: Annual PSA-prostate exams to screen for prostate cancer. Moles: Annual full body skin check by your doctor and monthly by you to detect changes in moles or other skin spots that may indicate the presence of melanoma or other skin cancers. Vision: See an ophthalmologist every one or two years to check for glaucoma, cataracts and other eye problems. Dentist: Yearly visits to keep your teeth healthy and to check for signs of oral cancer and, also, if necessary, adjust the fit of dentures. |
