Library movie shaken, not stirred
JULIE CHAUTIN

If you like your summer vacation movies shaken, not stirred, the Murphy Public Library has a treat for you. The latest James Bond film will be shown on Thursday at 6 p.m. It is rated PG-13.

In a new twist the filmmakers go back in time to when Bond was just starting out. And it is obvious he is young and energetic. He is running over, climbing up and jumping off construction towers in pursuit of a bad guy. There is no better way to jumpstart an action film than by jumping off a crane.

This time around there is more to Bond than just a license to kill. He is vulnerable as only a young person can be. And often he acts before he thinks resulting in major mistakes. He also falls in love. Daniel Craig is the latest among the British actors who bring their own scent to Bond and he makes a lethal, intelligent Bond who had not yet learned to hide his feelings.

In this early story, the young Bond must prove to his boss M, played by the authoritative Judi Dench and the British Secret Service that he is worthy of a license to kill. Their job for him is to shut down the flow of terrorist money.

And what do terrorists do with their funds when they are not blowing up large objects? They try to invest it for the best possible return on assets, what else. If you thought the SEC was a watchdog, you should see how a terrorist acts when he thinks his financial manager has lost his principal.

But back to vacations for a moment. This version of the Bond franchise was filmed everywhere in Europe and beyond, from Venice to Big Ben in London and on to a villa on Lake Como in Italy. The National Museum in Prague provided interiors and Eton offered its cricket field. The seaside resort of Montenegro in Serbia and Paradise Island in the Bahamas happily provided the settings for the poker game worth millions.

Whether you want to look around Venice, admire Daniel Craig or just watch something blow up, now is the time to let Bond shake things up.
