Who is awesome?

"Did you see that new movie? "

"It was so awesome!" "What a slam dunk!"

"That kid can play!"

"He is awesome!"

"Man, that steak was awesome!"

"Man, God is awesome"

Have we become so enthralled with movies and sports and food and cars - the everyday stuff of lifethat the word "awesome" has lost all meaning? Can we recognize what is truly awesome? Or should I say who is truly awesome?

Isaiah 40 paints a stunning portrait of our great God. If you need a fresh vision of His awesomeness, spend some time meditating on this incredible portion of Scripture. But for now, let's just look at this verse "Who has measured the waters in the hollow of His hand, and marked off the heavens by the span, and calculated the dust of the earth by the measure, and weighed the mountains in a balance and the hills in a pair of scales?"

I want to break that down one phrase at a time. "Measured the waters in the hollow of His hand." Get the hollow of your hand ready, and look at that little place down there in the middle. Now consider all of the water in the entire world. Here's the research: 912,500 cubic miles of water. I don't know about you, but that number is beyond my comprehension. But God's like, "Got it. Got the water right here in the hollow of My hand."

"Marked off the heavens by the span." The span is the distance from the tip of your thumb to the tip of your baby finger. Though not as common in our day as it once was, the span is a form of measurement. For example, I can almost get my span around an orange. The picture here is that God can palm the world. God's like, "Got the whole thing some 25,326 miles all the way around right here."

"Calculated the dust of the earth by the measure." Have you ever tried to move a pile of dirt in your yard? If you have, you know that itís back breaking work.

Isaiah tells us that God takes all of the soil, all of the earth, all of the dirt and measures it out: "One cup." Thanks. Got it. And it's done.

"Weighed the mountains in a balance and the hills in a pair of scales." God's like, "O.K." Put the Rockies on this side of the scale. That's just about what We need over there in the United States. Let's not forget Canada.And now the Alps. How big do We want those to be? God weighed the mountains on a scale like you would weigh some vegetables or fruit at the grocery store.

Are you gripped by His awesomeness?" If that brief resume isn't enough to grab your attention, I don't know what will. There's no one like our God. No one! He alone is awesome.
