Matthew Wood, recipient of the 2007 Herman H. West Scholarship

Through the generous financial support of the West Family, the Herman H. West Scholarship was established to provide financial assistance to high school seniors form Cherokee County. One of Cherokee County's most distinguished citizens, Herman H. West dedicated his life and career to business, politics, community and civic affairs to serve the citizens of North Carolina, and especially Cherokee County. Realizing the value of a higher education and his commitment to his fellowman, Mr. West was instrumental in the establishment of Tri-County Community College, allowing the residents of Cherokee, Clay, and Graham Counties greater access to higher education.

Wood is a young man who leads by example. The staff of Andrews High School describe Matthew as being someone who is hardworking, honest and dependable, always having a good-hearted attitude and never complaining. He is a scholar athlete and has earned the highest distinction in Scouting by receiving his Eagle Scout award.

Wood plans to attend Western Carolina University majoring in Construction Management with desires to return to his hometown after graduation to begin his own construction company.

Serving on the Herman H. West Scholarship Selection Committee are John Snow, III Chairman, Martha West, Rhonda Adams, Frank Barber, and John Poltrock.
