William R. Gossett Scholars

Joanna Cornerstone Ministries, Inc. and the William R. Gossett Scholarship Selection Committee are proud to announce Michelle Garland as the first ever recipient of the William R. Gossett Scholarship.

Dr. Gossett's children Shelia Gossett Snow of Murphy and Dr. Daryl Gossett of Franklin to assist high school seniors and/or current undergraduates of Cherokee County in their pursuit of higher education, helping to offset the need of student loans, established the William R. Gossett Scholarship earlier this year in memory of Dr. Gossett.

Dr. Gossett was a practicing optometrist in Murphy from 1950 until his retirement due to health reasons in 1994. During his lifetime, Dr. Gossett freely gave his time to serve others and his community. Dr. Gossett's life of character and service impacted others while he was alive and this memorial scholarship will continue to impact the lives of students from Cherokee County. Dr. Gossett is an example to all students of today. After his discharge from the US Navy, and graduation from college, Dr. Gossett and his wife Maxine moved to Murphy in 1950 to begin his optometry practice. Dr. Gossettís first office was the location where Joanna Cornerstone Ministries is presently located.

Miss Garland is a 2006

graduate of Hiwassee Dam High School and is completing her first year of college. During high school, Michelle served as president of both the National Honor Society and HOSA. A scholar athlete, Michelle was selected for the Blue/White All-State Basketball Team. Her community service included membership of NC Grange, Modern Woodmen of America, and team leader of Relay for Life. Michelle has continued her involvement in service while a college student. Michelle's college professors commented on her high work ethic and desire to succeed in challenging courses. Michelle is also a J. Smith Howell Scholar.

Garland is a pre-pharmacy major attending Campbell University.

Serving on the 2007 William R. Gossett Scholarship Selection Committee are Chairman John Snow, III, Melissa Reid, LaKisha Blount, Dr. Jeff Larson, and Mark Stalcup.
