More students than ever pass AP test
By Gabby Hudson Staff Writer

Cherokee County students scoreed higher this year on the Advanced Placement exam.

School Superintendent, Jeanette Hedrick announced Thursday evening, during the monthly meeting of the Cherokee County School Board, that 40 percent of students in AP courses had passed the AP exam.

"This is the highest we have ever had," Hedrick said. It is a 20 percent increase over last year.

Hedrick said that one school achieved 50 percent passage rate.

"We are very proud that this year we had 142 students in the advanced placement program," she said."That is a drastic increase since the program (started)."

Hedrick told the board that this year some students were headed off to college with as many as 30 college credits already payed for and that can amount to a savings to parents of about $15,000.

Also, Hedrick reported that at the time of the meeting that she could not release any of the end of the grade test scores. However, early reports indicate that the schools have all reached, "growth status."

Reports from the Early College indicated that an 84 percent composite and over 90 percent of the students have at least nine hours and some have 11 hours of college credits as freshmen.

Also, the board voted to approve a Memo Of Understanding with the Clay County Schools to allow their students to attend the Early College, allotting 10 spaces.

The board also agreed to appoint a committee to examine the possibility of supplying laptop computers to students taking online courses and to research curricular supplements that include sports, bands and core classes.

The next board of education meeting will be held August 9, 2007 at Peachtree School starting at 6 p.m.
