Gas chamber for animals?

Editor,

The N.C. Dept. of Agriculture is proposing new regulations for euthanasia of shelter animals including the option of a gas chamber!

Gassing is not just a simple matter of falling asleep. This procedure places the animals in a lengthy excruciating situation of pain and fright before death.

It's difficult to believe anyone in our N.C. Agriculture Dept. would be unreasonable enough to even consider the option of such a brutal solution to end a helpless animal's life.

Sadly, before some of these animals even reach a shelter, they have already suffered severe mistreatment. Then, why should they be forced to endure a horribly cruel death?

The gas chamber has never been, nor should it ever be an acceptable method of euthanasia.

Please write to Mr. David S. McLeod, N.C. Dept. of Agriculture, 1001 Mail Service Center, Raleigh, NC 27699 to voice your objection to gassing animals.

But, please hurry - the deadline for public response is August 31st. For more info, go to www.ncche.com.

I want to congradulate you and your staff for your fine and informative news printed in the Cherokee Sentinel.

Even though I subscribe to both papers, I feel the Sentinel is just as important and should have recieved some recognition for the fine job you all do.

Keep up the good work and remember those who write or subscribe to the Sentinel are loyal customers. I commend all of you for your fine work.

To the Community

I would like to thank everyone for your support, prayers and letter during my recovery from burns sustained in a plane crash back in April.

You can't imagine how much strength it gave me during tough times. I have now been back in Murphy for a couple of weeks and with the assistance

of Drs. Meineke and Doan have started working again. I look forward to serving you and expressing my appreciation in person when I can.

Larry Opoliner, M.M.C. Surgeon
