Man gets 10 years in prison for shooting at neighbor
By Dwight Otwell Editor

A Cherokee County man Friday was sentenced to 10 years in prison in connection with shooting at a neighbor.

Taft Washington Laney was sentenced by federal Judge Lacy Thronburg.

A woman testified that Laney was a neighbor who lived up the road. She said they caught Laney in their house trying to steal tools. Laney held her and five of her con- struction crew at bay with a gun but they didn't pursue charges at that time.

"In the last incident we were fired upon on our job site (by Laney) from the woods with a high powered weapon. I will never forget the sound of bullets going by my body. He has made my life a nightmare."

The woman said a representative from the Cherokee County Sheriff's Department told her later that Laney tried to solicit someone in jail to murder her.
