Local Murphy High School teacher Lonnie Oliver, 52, was declared "not guilty" on a charge of sexual battery of one of his former students.
Judge Danny Davis presided over the criminal case involving a 15-year-old female student alleging that Oliver had made innapropriate contact with her.
The incident in question concerned alleged non-consensual sexual contact that occured on January 25 during class. Oliver was suspended with pay in March following his arrest and an investigation conducted by the school.
"I was scared," testified the student. "I didn't know what was going on and I didn't know what to do."
Following the 15-year-old young woman's testimony, several of her classmates testified about Oliver's behavior toward the alleged victim including claims of him winking, sitting unusually close to her, and giving her excessive attention.
Since transfering from Murphy High, the 15-year-old has been seeing a therapist and has been diagnosed with an anxiety disorder.
Oliver, who has recieved several teaching awards and recognitions, denied any contact with the student. He claimed to not even recognize her until the allegations were brought forth.
"I was really shocked and hurt," Oliver explained while on the stand, " I felt victimized."
Murphy High School Principal Jerry Brackett confirmed under oath that the school held an investigation prior to the Sheriff Department's involvement. Students were contacted and questioned based on the claims of the young woman.
Oliver has previously been evaluated and praised for his supe-
-rior teaching and had taught in the same classroom for 30 years.
"I don't touch girl students," he said in his defense, "I would never do that."
Oliver is not expected to return to Murphy High, as he had previously retired and was working on a yearly contractual basis.
"I do not know if he will apply again if a position makes itself available with his qualifications," said School Superintendent Dr. Jeanette Hedrick.
She is not aware if Oliver will attempt to re-apply at the school and did not appear to oppose or support any actions for him to do so.
