Gloria Dockery's 2006- 2007 second grade class just received their first published books in the mail! During the 2006-07 school year
Mrs. Dockery's 2nd grade classroom worked a lot on the "Craft of Writing," among other curricula. During the last two 6 weeks of school each student was truly able to experience the full writing process from "start to finish." After reading the book "The Keeping Quilt" which touched on family memories by author Patricia Polacco, they took a list of questions home to ask family members about their own experiences remembered from years gone by.
The results were thrilling and touching. Each student returned with very informative and interesting tales to tell about their own families and days gone by. The student's wrote a rough draft, revised it, and then used editing tools on computers and typed out their own stories. After completing this process they were able to illustrate their books as well. Not only did they learn more about the publishing process but they learned about their parents and/or grandparents.
