Political speaker coming October 18th to Young Harris College

The Institute for Continuing Learning at Young Harris College is pleased to announce the opportunity for the public to participate in one of it's programs, Reflections on Georgia Politics, coordinated by Bob Short. The first speaker of the Fall term is Dr. John Savage. Dr. Savage, who has been practicing dentistry in both Georgia and Florida for alsmot 50 years, is a renowned speaker on topics relating to dentistry, politics, and happiness.

On Thursday, October 18th, at 3:15 p.m. in the Wilson Auditorium at Young Harris College, Bob Short will interview Dr. Savage about his years in politics in Atlanta. In 1961 when Dr. Savage completed his tour in the Navy, he returned to Atlanta and started practicing dentistry. He immediately became active in the Young Republicans and in 1964 was the Goldwater Chair for Georgia which led to a Georgia victory for the Republican Presidential candidate. Also in 1964, Dr. Savage participated in the first contested Republican race in Georgia when he ran for the U.S House of Representatives against Jim O'Callahan. While he lost to Mr. O'Callahan, John stayed active in the Republican party and was elected as a Republican to the Georgia Legislature in 1970 from a south Atlanta district. Then, in 1974, he ran for Lt. Governor on the Republican ticket.

While Zell Miller won the position, John's percentage was substantial which was impressive for a state which was overwhelmingly Democratic.

After losing to Miller, John remained uninvolved in politics until January, 1977, when he was elected to the seat in the Georgia House vacated by Mike Egan who went to Washington, DC with the newly elected Jimmy Carter.

In 1984, he decided not to run for reelection. In 1987, he left Atlanta and returned to his roots in the Panhandle of Florida. He practices dentistry in Ebro on the banks of the Choctawhatchee River. Although he continues his interest in political affairs, Dr. Savage is not willing to become involved in an active way.

The public is invited to the Thursday, October 18th 3:15 p.m. session at Young Harris. The presentation is free to the public and there will be a reception immediately after the presentation.

On Saturday, October 20th during the Chautauqua in Andrews, Dr. Savage will give a presentation on Happiness at 2:00 p.m. in the Cultural Arts Center on Chesnut Street in Andrews. While John is a practiciing dentist, among his many passions is the study of what makes us happy. He has developed a theory about the way to achieve happiness. after the October 20th presentation, there will be a reception at the home of Nora and Larry King at 355 Little Rager Rd. in Murphy.

For further information about either of the two presentations, contact Nora King at 828-644-0937.
