The Vanilla Man
By Keith Williamson Special to the Sentinel
When
Debra and I were first married years ago, I led a weekly home Bible Study for newly married couples.
I opened every meeting with something known as an "icebreaker" question. The question was not spiritual and designed to help the group members to better know each other.
One week I came up with a great icebreaker. "If you had to describe your spouse as an ice cream flavor, what flavor would it be and why?"
Before it was my turn to be labeled, my mouth could almost taste the answers. I remember the man before me was Rocky Road. How could Debra top that?
Debra, with a huge smile said, "Oh, that's easy. It's vanilla. He is simple, has nothing hidden, and when he is criticized he kind of melts."
I was surprised and a little hurt when she answered. But, thinking on her answer for over 12 years now, I know she gave the perfect answer. Being simple and melting more times than I would like to admit, characterizes my life. I truly am The Vanilla Man.
Everyone is an ice cream flavor. Unfortunately, some people are disappointed with theirs. Don't be. Instead, give your flavor to God.
He has a purpose for every flavor he makes.
