15th Annual CROP Walk The fifteenth annual Cherokee County CROP walk was held October 14th in Murphy. Nancy Yates, the walk organizer, said "The walk was the best one yet and a big success!" The walk had a record turnout with more than 230 walkers who raised over $16,000. With 25% of the proceeds helping local food banks, the $4,000 kept in the county will help with a purchase of much needed food. The other funds will assist worldwide those who suffer from disasters, both natural and made. "It is always rewarding to help support self sufficiency projects that end poverty and give hope which is the goal of CROP," said a supporter. This year the Golden Shoe award, for the group that was the most successful in raising funds, went to the Murphy Elementary School Jr. Beta Club. The children wunder the sponsorship of Melissa Reid raised $2,740. The Jr. Beta Club has been the recipient of the award in the past. Raid said, "The service project helps the children see a civic need and work for a community solution, a good grass roots civics lession for all of us." All the walk organizers and participants thank all those that made this year's walk such a success. |
