Copper stolen from store roof
By Dwight Otwell Editor

Thieves stole approximately 400 pounds of copper and coils from the roof of Ashley Furniture in Murphy.

Murphy Assistant Police Chief Jeff Postell said the theft occurred sometime between October 16 and October 19. The copper was taken from Ashley Furniture's air conditioning units.

Postell said Ashley personnel discovered the theft when they had issues with their heating/ air conditioning units. The thieves apparently got on the roof from the Radio Shack building, which has a lower roof than Ashley Furniture, Postell said.

"We don't believe they (thieves) were local people," Postell said.

Across the nation, copper has been the source of thefts as it has become a valuable item.

"This is the first time that I know of anyone stealing copper in town this year," Postell said.

He asked that anyone with any information about the theft to call the Murphy Police Department.
