Andrews addresses budget What's needed now and in the future
By Lizz Harold Staff Writer

The Andrews Police Department is set to receive valuable budget money that will provide more equipment for officers.

A budget amendment made this month is set to keep half of the town's surplus money on reserve and make up to $3,000 of city funds available to the Andrews police officers. The local force is expected to purchase tazers and other valuable equipment.

The town also recognized a pressing need for maintenance funds for city infrastructure. According to Andrews aldermen, they don't want to raise taxes in order to address budget needs.

"We need to tighten up on money," said Alderman Steve Jordan, " I don't want to go up on taxes."

The town continues to work towards new solutions to fix old problems. Several parks, city buildings and roofs require repair to ensure they withstand winter weather. Road safety has been a concern that has prompted citizens to request stop signs and speed bumps on residential roads.

Andrews aldermen also announced expansion that included more property within the city. Industrial Opprotunities Inc., is among the property lots that have been officially annexed by the city. IOI voluntarily sought annexation after petitioning.

Next month the town board will convene to discuss the possibility of staggared elections that would change the terms spent by city aldermen.

Mayor Johnny Brown said that the board wants to do what is best for future board members as they make their decision.
