Murphy Christmas tree lighting

DWIGHT OTWELL/Sentinel Photo Davis McHan, left, and Chase Newton, from the Learning Center, enjoy big bites of ice cream Friday evening at the Corner Candy Store after the annual Murphy Tree Lighting ceremony and program. A large contingent of people came out to get Christmas started early this year.
DWIGHT OTWELL/Sentinel Photo jSanta Claus wouldn't say if Murphy Mayor Bill Hughes and his wife Barbara Hughes had been good or bad this year. But from their big smiles, it is apparent that something went right. Mayor Hughes had the huge responsibility of throwing the switch for the lighting of the town Christmas tree. He had been practicing because the lights came on with no problems.
DWIGHT OTWELL/Sentinel Photo Members of the Learning Center sang several songs for the crowd's enjoyment.

Diane Crowder got the crowd going by singing Happy Birthday to Jesus.
