Family Resources in collaboration with Tri-County Community College will offer ESL (English as a second language) classes every Wednesday and Thursday from 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 a.m. Classes will be held in the basement of Family Resources and are free to anyone wishing to participate. Boys and girls chess instructions will start again for the 3rd season at the Murphy Public Library every Tuesday from 1-4 p.m. Chess instructor Karl Godert offers free of charge chess teaching to all children of all ages. Children as young as 4 participated last year. A total of 34 youngsters participated with Aaron Rogers emerging as two time champion and Jeremy Cook was runner-up. Chess increases concentration, improves analytical skills, boosts self-confidence an d stimulates creativity. Learn and have fun.

Hanging Dog Missionary Baptist Church is in partnership with "There's Hope For the Hungry." We will be distributing boxes of nonperishable food at no cost to those in the community who have a need or might be going through a difficult time. Exhibit in Andrews Art Museum is seeking artists in all media, including artists for our gift shop. New exhibits are scheduled to open the first Sa turday night of each month.

Scripture study of the Gospel of John and the Johannie Letters is being offered for 14 weeks on Mondays 10-11:30 a.m. and on Thursday evenings 6:30-8 p.m. Each session provides time to reflect on sc ripture, pr ovides co mmentary and daily questions and concludes with a brief synopsis. Discover the amazing world of insects every Monday. The Summer Reading Program in Murphy begins on June 16 and runs through July 28. The 2008 Summer Reading Program is open to young people, preschool through young adult. In addition to the programs each Monday, children are encouraged to complete a reading log to turn in for special treats. The program Busfor ages 3-6 is 10:30-11 a.m. The program for 1st-5th grade is 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. Registration is Monday, June 9 at 11:30 a.m. If you are unable to register at that time, simply come to the programs. Coffee With The Poets, NCWN West (Netwest) is pleased to have Estelle Darrow Rice read Wednesday, June 25, at 10:30 a.m., at Phillips and Lloyd Book Shop on the square in Hayesville. Estelle says "that by writing poetry, she is healed of sorrow and uplifted in joy." She finds da ily in spiration in th e mo untains that surround her home, which inspired her book, Quiet Times. She is a published author of both poetry and prose. She finds ti me to sh are her craft by teaching workshops. She holds membership in NCWN West (Netwest) and the North Carolina Poetry Society. June and July are months we invite and welcome students of any age to come and read one of their original poems during open mic. Glenda Barrett of Hiawassee, Georgia and Robert Kimsey of Mc Caysville, Georgia will be reading original works in the Keith House, June 26 at 7 p.m. The event is sponsored by the North Carolina Writer's Network, Netwest. All are invited for an hour of original poetry and prose. Glenda is a "home grown girl", born and raised in Hiawassee. Her writings are humorous, heartfelt, nostalgic and pure magic. Robert is author of chapbooks, "Paths From the Shawnee Spring" and a limited edition "Readings". He spends much of his time volunteering and teaching writing to children in the Fannin County schools.

Revival services will be held at the Upper Peachtree Baptist Church beginning Monday, June 23 through Friday, June 27. Services will begin nightly at 7 p.m. with the Rev. James Langston as guest speaker. Special music each evening. Pastor Steve West and

the church family invite all to attend.

Art Friday, is at the offices of One Dozen Who Care, Inc. (ODWC). This is a place of interest to local artists and art lovers. ODWC is located at 65 Wilson Street, Andrews, between PJ's Pizzas and the Dollar General store. Art Friday is June 27 from 4-7 p.m. This week Jane Birchfieldan d Da rlene Heaton will be showing their artwork.

Nationally known cartoonist and humorous illustrator, Jack Cassady will appear at The Daily Grind & Wine in Murphy Friday, June 27, from 7-10 p.m., along with the jazz duo Two Tooters. Cassady will be helping to raise much needed funds for the animals of the Valley River Humane Society by drawing individual cartoon portraits (caricatures) for a minimum donation of $10 each. Cassady's graphic humor has appeared world-wide in both the print and electronic media. Samples of his work and places he has published can be found on his website at: www.ToonMaker.com. Historians to speak. Carroll and Jenny Wray, husband and wife, will be speaking about two groups of heroic pioneers who crossed the plains in 1856. The Willie and Martin handcart companies, comprised of 980 immigrants from the British Isles, walked 1,300 miles to join other members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Utah. Their story is of miraculous survival in overcoming severe blizzards in central Wyoming. The meeting will be held at a residence located at 124 Rockridge Rd., Murphy, 6 p.m. Saturday, June 28. LOCAL AUTHOR/POET TEACHES WRITING AS A SPIRITUAL EXPERIENCE Sacred Writing Workshop in Murphy Writing Medicine, a local organization promoting writing as a spiritual tool will present Self Illuminated: Writing Your Heart Out! at the Murphy Public Library Saturday June 28 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Whether taking the form of poetry, song, prose, essay, journal entry, or doodle, this two-hour workshop will explore several simple writing exercises to unlock the the stores of personal truth hidden in the mystery of You. Workshop fee is $45 per person. Registration is required.

Prayer for the Tri County area. Tri County Christian Crusade will have a time of Praise and Prayer for our area at Grace Fellowship Baptist church in Andrews Sunday night June 29 at 6pm. This event is held each 5th Sunday at different churches. Chris West from Mountain View Community Church will be leading the praise and worship. This is a multi church, nondenominational event. Open Horse Shows Scheduled. The Union County Saddle Club's next Open Horse Shows are schedule for Saturday, June 28 and Saturday, July 5, 2008. Sign up time for both shows will be at 11 a.m. with a start time of 12 Noon. The July 5 show is a make-up from the rain out in March. The show grounds are located on the corner of Hwy. 515 and 325 in Blairsville. The shows are open to the public and there is no charge for admission. Come on out and enjoy a day of fun. The Small Business Center of One Dozen Who Care (ODWC) is offering a four-week Beadweaving class taught by Jean Busch and Swanee Hielscher. Beginning July 7, the class will be held on Monday evenings from 5:30-8:30 p.m. Participants do not need to have prior knowledge of beadweaving to attend and will be invited to display their work for sale at the ODWC Art Friday on August 22 from 4-7 p.m. Art Friday is a monthly event that showcases the works of local artists. There is limited seating and registration is required. The deadline for registration is by noon, Monday, June 30. The Mountain Morning Craft Guild has announced their upcoming craft class schedule for July and August. The first We dnesday of each month is the regular business meeting for the organization. Classes for July will feature pottery whistles on July 9; wind chimes on July 16, and handmade cards on July 30. No classes are scheduled for July 23 as the guild will be making final pr eparations fo r th eir Christmas in July exhibit which will be held July 24 through 26. August workshops will be on handcrafting books on August 13, purses on August 20 and drying flowers in a variety of ways on August 27. The dried flowers wi ll be us ed in upcoming workshops later in the fall. Classes are held from 10 a.m. until noon at the Mountain Morning workshop, located at 1158C Main Street just east of Party Time ice cream and Andrews Town Hall. An average fee of $5 covers the cost of materials. Pre-registration is encouraged as seating is limited. Party with Panache Luncheon. Tri-County Women's Connection invites all women to enjoy the July 10 luncheon, at noon, in the fellowship hall of the First Baptist Church, Murphy.
