Boys and girls chess instructions will start again for the 3rd season at the Murphy Public Library every Tuesday from 1-4 p.m. Chess instructor Karl Godert offers free of charge chess teaching to all children of all ages. Children as young as 4 participated last year. A total of 34 youngsters participated with Aaron Rogers emerging as two time champion and Jeremy Cook was runner-up. Chess increases concentration, improves analytical skills, boosts self-confidence and stimulates creativity. Learn and have fun.

Exhibit in Andrews Art Museum is seeking artists in all media, including artists for our gift shop. Scripture study of the Gospel of John and the Johannie Letters is being offered for 14 weeks on Mondays 10-11:30 a.m. and on Thursday evenings 6:30-8 p.m. Each session provides time to reflect on scripture, provides commentary and daily questions and concludes with a brief synopsis. lThe Mountain Morning Craft Guild has announced their upcoming craft class schedule for July and August. The first Wednesday of each month is the regular business meeting for the organization. Classes for July will wind chimes on July 16, and handmade cards on July 30. No classes are scheduled for July 23 as the guild will be making final preparations for their Christmas in July exhibit which will be held July 24 through 26. August workshops will be on handcrafting books on August 13, purses on August 20 and drying flowers in a variety of ways on August 27. The dried flowers will be used in upcoming workshops later in the fall. Classes are held from 10 a.m. until noon at the Mountain Morning workshop, located at 1158C Main Street just east of Party Time ice cream and Andrews Town Hall. An average fee of $5 covers the cost of materials. Pre-registration is encouraged as seating is limited. For the first time the AARP is conducting its Driver Safety class in Murphy on August 4 and 5, 2008, at the Murphy Public Library. The classroom-only instruction will be in two sessions, from 1-5 PM. It is designed to increase the safety of drivers over the age of 50. There is a $10 materials charge. Subjects to be covered include defensive driving, age-related changes, driving regulations and how to increase fuel economy. The class will be taught by Jacob Dorn, an AARP volunteer.
