River Walk construction continues
      Summer is an ideal time to enjoy all that the town of Murphy has to offer. One main attraction that is both inviting and good for your health is the Murphy River Walk. Opened in 2003, the River Walk winds through Konehete Park behind the Hiawassee Pool and Wellness Center all the way up to the Health Department.

Highest bidder
      Roy Bamfield, left, stands with Linda Bamfield, Jack Cassady and Amy Johnson of the Daily Grind. Roy was the highest bidder for the original artwork penned by Jack Casady to promote the Valley River Humane Society's fundraiser at the Daily Grind in Murphy. Cartoonist and humorous illustrator Jack Cassady hosted the fundraiser for on Fri. June 27. Cassady offered caricatures for a minimum donation of $10 and was busy until way past 11 p.m. Cassady's graphic humor has appeared world-wide in both print and electronic media. Samples of his work and places he has published can be found on his Web site, www.ToonMaker.com. Thanks to all who made this a successful event!

Murphy Library's auction a success
      Bob Grove began the Murphy Library's auction on June 21 with a drum roll flourish and kept the beat going for over two and a half hours as he charmed and cajoled the audience of library patrons. By the end he had helped the Friends of Murphy Library bring in almost $7,000 from both the silent and live auctions.

      Best-selling Christian author Beth Moore will deliver a message to an estimated 80,000 women on August 1 and 2, 2008 from Louisville, KY; and local residents will have the opportunity to see the popular Bible teacher live without leaving Murphy.

One "Whopper" of a mistake
      Bob, who is now approaching retirement, shared this boyhood memory with my brother in Arkansas where they work. I laughed until my sides hurt. "When I was growing up years ago the only place we had to eat out was a Burger King. We didn't get to go very often, so getting to have a Whopper was like the very best thing you could eat.

CLINT "PAP" DAVIS
      Clint "Pap" Davis, 76, of Marble died Friday, July 4, 2008 at his residence. He was a native of Macon County, but had been living in Cherokee County for over 30 years. He was the son of the late Fred and Lillie Pendergrass Davis. Clint worked as a driller for Asheville Contractors for several years and later retired from Magnavox.
