The Business Women of Murphy members recognized Designer's Alley owner Robin Kolar with a Certificate of Honorary Membership into the organization earlier this summer. Designer's Alley is the home of "The Princess Closet" which is one of the Business Women of Murphy's community outreach projects. The Princess Closet offers formal dresses and accessories to disadvantaged high school girls who might miss the opportunity to attend their prom or formal dance were it not for this service.
"We have received many donations of beautiful gowns, shoes, and accessories to put together an entire look that transforms a young lady for her special night," said Marie Speigel, President of The Business Women of Murphy.
Robin Kolar has set aside space in her salon for ThePrincess Closet where girls can come in and try on dresses. "When you see a child who knew she would miss her prom because she didn't have the resources to afford a nice dress, and then come in here and know she can go … It's a great feeling." said Kolar.
The Princess Closet charges a $30 refundable deposit. The dress must be cleaned and returned a week after the event date. Local seamstress Judy Johnson has volunteered to take care of any repairs to the gowns and Imperial Laundry and Dry Cleaners will clean them. Students are referred by their high-school counselors and must show financial hardship to qualify.
The Business Women of Murphy thanked Robin Kolar and Designer's Alley for partnering with them to make a difference in the community. If you would like to donate new or gently used formals, prom dresses, shoes or accessories please contact Robin at 828- 835-9000.
