George Ervin

George Ervin, a beloved husband, father, papaw, brother, uncle and friend went home to the Lord on August 12, 2008 after a courageous battle with cancer.

George was a strong man with a huge heart and a quite, gentle presence. He was an active member at Peachtree Memorial Baptist Church, where he sang in the choir and participated in the Men's Brotherhood. He was a man who lived out his faith in every path of his life.

George is survived by his wife, Barbara, of 24 years and 6 children, Darren, Jonathan, Renee, Dan, Dennis, and Dedra; sisters Vergie Barham of Henderson, Tenn., Lerlie Morris of Memphis Tenn.; brothers Roy Neal of Henderson, Paul and Ray of Selmer, Tenn.; and many nieces and nephews. As well as his very special friend Vernon Biggers.

Born on September 7, 1941, George was raised in Western Tennessee. He was a graduate of Memphis State University in Memphis, Tenn. George was a U.S. Army veteran.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Vester and Euna Ervin, and his brother, Harlee Ervin. He and Barbara have lived in the Murphy area for 23 years where he has been Owner/ Broker of Ervin & Associates for the past 13 years and very involved in the community. He was a member of the North Carolina District West Civitan and Gideons in Murphy and he served with the Victory Junction Gang which provides a camp for children with cancer.

A celebration of his life was held at Cochran Funeral Home Chapel in Murphy. Saturday, August 16 at 4 p.m. with the Dr .Chester Jones and the Rev. Butch Stillwell officiating., music was by Sue West.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Peachtree Memorial Church Bulding Fund, 440 Upper Peachtree Rd., Murphy, NC. 20906, or the Clay County Cancer Society at P.O. Box 1193, Hayesville, NC. 28906.
